Alanya Travel Guide: History, Nature and Beaches of the Mediterranean Gem
Located approximately 140 km from Antalya, Alanya is not only the largest district of the province but also one of Turkey’s most popular holiday destinations. With its ever-growing population and developed infrastructure, there have even been discussions about Alanya becoming a separate province.
A Glimpse into Alanya’s Past
Although the exact founding date of the city is unknown, the Greek historian Herodotus states that the first settlements in Alanya appeared after the Trojan War, around 1800 BC. Alanya has hosted many great civilizations such as the Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans.
The name "Alanya" originates from the Seljuk period. It was known as "Alaiye" during the reign of Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat and was later changed to Alanya during the Republican era.
